Members of Mackay & Schnellmann Pty Limited
have been involved in the exploration and assessment of iron deposits
both in the Pilbara and elsewhere.
Examples of recent assignments on ferrous metals
are:
WESTERN AUSTRALIA, 1994
On site geological services were provided for the field seasons
of three successive years on iron ore exploration programmes carried
out by a Western Australian group of companies on the Hope Downs
1, Hope 2 and Hope 3 deposits. Exploration activities comprised
RC and core drilling, down hole geophysics, winzing and bulk sampling.
Responsibility was taken for up to four RC drill rigs and one core
drill rig on site at any given time each with its supervising geologist
along with contract geophysicists. During the period a total of
around 100 000 RC metres were drilled. Between field programmes,
provided the leader of a small team of geologists and other personnel
engaged on the compilation and collation of data using various computer
programs, the carrying out of structural interpretations of the
deposits and the preparation of sections and plans. The work over
these years elucidated the complex structure of the Hope Downs deposits
with their tight near vertical isoclinal folding and sub horizontal
thrust faults with multiple splays. The database and interpretation
were used for subsequent deposit modeling and an eventual pre feasibility
study. Reports were also produced for both internal company purposes
and for lodging with the Department of Minerals and Energy.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA, 1992
An investigation was carried out of Marra Mamba iron deposits in
the Chichester Ranges and the Fortescue River valley to the north
of Wittenoom in the Pilbara Mineral Field on behalf of a Western
Australian exploration company. The field programme involved RC
drilling with down the hole gamma ray logging: holes were sited
after examination of the surface geology. The purpose of the programme
was to assess the probability of there being potentially economic
mineralised Mount Newman Member in the area. Upon completion of
the exploration, the data generated were assessed and a report prepared
on the potential of the area.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA, 1991
An assessment was undertaken of the Tallering Peak iron deposit
near Geraldton in the Yalgoo and Northampton Mineral Fields. The
study was based upon the publicly available data held by the Mines
Department and involved consideration of the geology, calculation
of the potential resource to an economic mining depth and over different
strike lengths and the estimation of stripping ratios. The assignment
was carried out on behalf of an Australian explorer as input to
their bid to acquire the deposit.
Additional examples of assignments involving ferrous
metals will be found on the Expertise
pages of this website.
